Caistor Cafe overview

CAISTOR CAFE — MENU DESIGN — 2024

Overview

Redesigned the takeaway café menu for Caistor Arts & Heritage Centre to improve readability, strengthen the venue's identity and communicate the quality of its locally sourced food more effectively.

Combined structured category blocks, right aligned pricing, warm neutral colours and understated decorative details to create a menu that felt appropriate for the centre's historic setting while remaining quick and easy to use.

Caistor Cafe problem

Problem

The previous menu relied on dense text, inconsistent grouping and limited visual hierarchy, making products and prices difficult to compare.

It also failed to communicate the warmth, heritage and care associated with the café experience, weakening the customer's first impression before an order had been placed.

The redesign needed to achieve four priorities:

  • Make categories and products easier to navigate.
  • Present prices clearly and consistently.
  • Fit a large amount of information onto one page without overcrowding it.
  • Reflect the character of Caistor Arts & Heritage Centre.

Process

01

Establish the layout foundation

Created a clean cream canvas with balanced margins and a structured grid to organise the complete menu on one page.

The layout was designed to support quick scanning while retaining enough negative space to feel calm and considered.

02

Strengthen brand recognition

Positioned the Caistor Arts & Heritage Centre identity prominently and introduced a vertical MENU tab as a recognisable visual anchor.

Used consistent placement and restrained styling to make the design feel established rather than overly decorative.

03

Organise the menu categories

Structured more than 20 food and drink listings into six clear sections:

Soup → Cakes → Salads → Sandwiches → Paninis → Drinks

Separated each category using subtle wavy dividers and clear headings, helping customers move through the content in a logical order.

04

Improve item and price readability

Applied consistent spacing and right aligned pricing to make products easier to compare.

Used a clear typographic hierarchy to distinguish category names, item descriptions and prices without adding visual clutter.

05

Refine and prepare for print

Balanced typography, colour, spacing and decorative elements before preparing the final high resolution artwork.

The finished menu was supplied as a print ready file and presented in context to confirm readability at table distance.
